Project loon
- Googles vision of the future of the internet.
- 2 dozen balloons were launched in New Zealand.
- There goal is to bring internet access to the 2/3 of the worlds population who cannot get online.
- It's like a balloon powered internet.
- They are 15 meters in diameter.
- Making them small enough that you would need a telescope to see it from the sky.
- They fly twice as high as commercial air traffic.
- They run on solar power and also have GPS.
- The antenna beams up into the sky to the balloon, that one balloon talks to there neighboring balloons, then goes down to the ground station which is connected to the local internet provider.
- Years away from completion
- They hope to have thousands of balloons in the sky and bring people online.
